The Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) international undersea cable broke down on Sunday, disrupting Internet connections from Viet Nam to other countries.

This is the fourth time this year the APG submarine cable route has had a problem.

An internet service provider said the faulty section was on the APG cable, located about 132km from the shore off the central city of Da Nang.

Internet connections from Viet Nam to other countries might be unstable or slow down in peak hours as a result of the faulty cable. The cause of the fault and the time to fix it were not disclosed.

The APG was installed in October 2016 and officially brought into operation in December 2016, after four years of construction.

The cable, which cost US$450 million and has a capacity of more than 54 Tbps (terabytes per second), runs 10,400 km under the Pacific linking Japan with Hong Kong, mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

APG investors included Vietnamese telecom providers such as VNPT, Viettel, FPT Telecom and CMC Telecom. The APG was expected to bring a stable cable system to Vietnamese internet users and reduce Viet Nam's dependence on the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) service. — VNS
