Viettel Group posted revenue of VND54.4 trillion (US$2.34 billion) and integrated profit of VND10.1 trillion in the first quarter of this year, representing 107 per cent and 116 per cent year-on-year increases respectively.

The group said the boom of 4G and increasing use of mobile data contributed to the success.

Statistics from the Ministry of Information and Communications showed Viettel signed up about 1 million new 4G subscribers a month in the first three months of the year. Currently, it has nearly 17 million subscribers using 4G services, 1.3 times higher than total number of all other telecom providers combined.

Its 4G services are popular due to their high speed and cheap tariffs. The data use of its customers in the January-March period was double the same period last year.

Viettel plans to continue to improve quality of 4G services in the second quarter of the year, bringing its total number of base transceiver stations to 50,000.

In addition, its 5G network will go into trial operation in Ha Noi in May. — VNS
