Steel giant helps district meet new rural area criteria

HCM CITY (Biz Hub) – The nation's leading steel and corrugated iron producer, Hoa Sen Group, has announced it would provide VND1.5 billion (US$71,400) to assist Phuoc Long District in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Bac Lieu carry out its ongoing new rural area programme.

The six-year programme is scheduled to close in 2015.

A signing ceremony for the sponsorship was organised in HCM City on November 12.

The district will use the money given by Hoa Sen to build bridges and improve the living conditions of local residents.

Phuoc Long is one of five pilot districts selected nation-wide to carry out the new rural area programme. After three years, two of its communes have completed 18 and 17 of a total of 19 criteria, which includes reducing the number of poor households, provision of education, construction of infrastructure including schools, rural markets roads and bridges, ensuring power supply and providing other basic necessities. The district aims to have seven communes fulfil all 19 criteria by 2015.

The Hoa Sen Group accounts for 40 per cent of the domestic steel and corrugated iron market and is ranked as one of the leading exporters in Southeast Asia.— Photo dddn

The district established a social welfare fund in March 2013 to call for and manage investments in building bridges, roads and schools.

Hoa Sen has organised many programmes for social development including helping disadvantaged children and supporting teachers affected by floods in the central region.

Currently, the group accounts for 40 per cent of the domestic steel and corrugated iron market and is ranked as one of the leading exporters in Southeast Asia.—VNS
