HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Saigon Co.op, owner of the Co.opmart supermarket chain, has set itself a sales target of VND26.19 trillion (US$1.227 billion) this year, or 10 per cent higher than last year, to retain its position as the countrys leading retailer.
Speaking at a review meeting in HCM City on March 9, Nguyen Thi Hanh, Saigon Co.ops general director, said it plans to open at least six Co.opmart outlets and 30 Co.op Food stores this year.
A Co.opXtra hypermarket in HCM Citys District 7 and a Sense City mall in Ben Tre Province are also expected to open this year, she said.
There would be fierce competition in the retail market this year, and to improve its competiveness, Saigon Co.op would work to optimise its existing business operations and enhance co-operation and investment to expand its distribution network and develop new business models, she said.
It would also focus on restructuring its organisation and developing human resources, she added.

Despite the economic difficulties last year, Saigon Co.op managed to achieve its targets and paid 48.9 per cent higher taxes than in 2013.
It opened six Co.opmart outlets, 17 Co.op Food stores, more than 30 Co.op stores and Can Tho Sense City last year, raising its total outlets to over 365.
For being among the top 10 retailers in the Asia-Pacific region last year it won the Best of The Best Award from Retail Asia Publishing, Euromonitor International, and KPMG.
It contributed more than VND6.5 billion ($304,330) to social programmes last year, including building houses and providing scholarships for the poor and funding heart surgeries for poor patients.
Speaking at the meeting, Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwoman of the HCM City Peoples Committee, hailed Saigon Co.ops achievements, saying it has greatly contributed to the success of the citys price stabilisation programme and "Vietnamese people give priority to using Vietnamese goods" campaign.
She urged the company to focus on both expanding at home and bolstering co-operation with foreign partners to introduce more Vietnamese goods abroad. — VNS
