Unilever Vietnam’s OMO brand has in collaboration with the Tien Giang Province Youth Organisation planted 10,000 casuarina trees along the coasts of Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong districts in the province to kick off a number of afforestation activities in Tien Giang, Thanh Hoa and Tra Vinh this month.

The planting last Sunday was part of a project called "Dirt for Good, Green Shield for Viet Nam" carried out by the brand together with official agencies and non-profit organisations.

The goal is to increase the forest area in the country to protect from floods, flash floods and landslides in Thanh Hoa and from saltwater intrusion in Tra Vinh and Tien Giang.

The programme will grow 10 hectares of forest at the Ben En National Park in Thanh Hoa Province with 10,000 plants and trees that can be used as food for animals by March next year.

The project seeks to call on the community to embrace the idea of creating a “Green Shield” for the country and protect the environment, particularly valuable forest resources.

According to the General Statistics Office, in the first seven months of this year, 1,647 hectares of forests were damaged, with 404.1ha being cut down. The shrinking of forest areas not only severely affects the flora and fauna, but also increases floods, landslides and saltwater intrusion.

The company also plans to plant a total of 4,000 trees in HCM City’s districts Binh Thanh and 12 and many fruit trees and large-canopy trees in Ha Noi. — VNS
