Bamboo Airways will launch two direct routes connecting Munich - Germany's third-largest city - with Viet Nam's Ha Noi and HCM City in the middle of this year.

The announcement follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between the airline and Munich Airport earlier this week.

The two direct routes will operate from July with one round-trip flight per week from Ha Noi and two from HCM City.

The airline said it will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners - the most modern, fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft as of now, with numerous outstanding utilities and services, for these routes.

“The MoU allows us to combine the strength of facilities and long-term operating experience of Munich Airport with a rapidly-growing network and the 5-star-oriented service offered by Bamboo Airways, promoting the operation of direct routes linking Viet Nam and Germany, meeting the travel needs of people in the two countries," Bui Quang Dung, deputy general director of Bamboo Airways, said.

"The new connections to Ha Noi and HCM City will give us direct access to this important market for the first time. This is an excellent response to the steadily growing interest in Viet Nam as a travel destination," said Andreas von Puttkamer, Senior Vice President of Aviation Flughafen Munchen GmbH (Munich Airport).

Munich Airport is the main gateway to the city of Munich - Germany's third-largest city after Berlin and Hamburg, and is one of the most important economic, transportation and cultural centres in the country. Munich is both the second largest airport in Germany and the only 5-star airport in Europe.

In 2019, the airport served 48 million passengers on 417,000 flights, taking them to 75 countries and 254 destinations worldwide.

Established in 2017, Bamboo Airways is the first private airline in Viet Nam to aim at providing 5-star services.

Bamboo Airways is operating more than 40 domestic and international routes, transporting more than three million passengers per year.

In 2020, the airline plans to expand its network to 85 routes, including 60 domestic routes and 25 international destinations. Bamboo Airways' fleet is expected to reach 50 aircraft, including 12 wide-body aircraft Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. — VNS
