HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Officials from the HCM City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport, rated among the world's worst by a travel website, discussed measures to improve services with international airlines and service providers at a meeting on Tuesday.

The director of the Tan Son Nhat Airport Authority, Dang Tuan Tu, said the domestic terminal was overloaded by 20-30 per cent as it handled over three million passengers a year.

Under the circumstances, the airport could only provide basic services, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted him as saying.

This would continue for the next eight years until Long Thanh Airport opens in Dong Nai Province, he said.

Speaking about complaints about the poor wifi service at the airport, he admitted this to be true but said the contractor had been ordered to change the network by the end of this year.

Toilets were regularly checked and hygienic standards would be improved if there were complaints about them, he promised.

He said the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) had asked the Ministry of Transport to tweak systems, including the integration of the customs and security formalities to improve passengers' convenience.

The CAAV had got the green light from the Ministry of Finance and is waiting for approval from customs, he said.

The director of the Southern Airports Authority, Tran Doan Mau, urged service providers at the airport and carriers to deploy more staff to handle the increasing number of passengers.

He said the goal was to take Tan Son Nhat out of the list of worst airports and ensure absolute safety.

Travel website sleepinginairports.net this year rated HCM City's airport the eighth worst in the world.

Lai Xuan Thanh, head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam, earlier this week said aviation authorities would review the problems faced by Tan Son Nhat and find ways to improve things.

Last year the site had listed Ha Noi's Noi Bai, the second biggest international airport in Viet Nam after Tan Son Nhat, among the worst in Asia.

The Noi Bai Airport Authority director issued a public apology and pledged to improve things.

Noi Bai not only got out of "Asia's worst" list this year but has even made its way into the list of Asia's 30 best.
