Lục Ngạn District in Bắc Giang Province, known as “the capital of lychee”, will host the “Lục Ngạn Lychee – The Quintessence of Vietnamese Fruit” festival from 6 to 7 June.
Saigon Co.op has signed an agreement with Toàn Thắng Bắc Giang Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative to buy and distribute Lục Ngạn lychee through its more than 800 sales points across the country.
Besides the domestic consumption, Bắc Giang has increased the lychee export to many markets, including the US, Japan, EU, Australia and Canada, according to the Department of Industry and Trade of Bắc Giang Province.
The wholesale price of the Vietnamese fruit at Costco stores in Adelaide city is 18.99 AUD per kilo, while the retail price via electronic platforms in Sydney and Melbourne is about 35 AUD per kilo.
This surge is attributed to adverse weather conditions that significantly reduced Bắc Giang’s lychee output, which now stands at nearly 100,000 tonnes, around half of last year''s production.
Due to crop failure, it is estimated that the whole season''s output of this year only reach about 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes, compared to 70,000 tonnes of previous year.
The airline reported that it had transported nearly 90 tonnes of the fruit to the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Laos, and Cambodia this summer.
A cultural exchange promotion event and introducing Vietnam lychee was organised at Kitahanada AEON Mall in Osaka, Japan in a series of activities to marks 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations.
A series of activities, including the Vietnamese Goods Week programme, as well as business networking and lychee testing events, have taken place in the island nation.
