Domestic live hog prices have fallen deeply, while enterprises have kept importing pork. There is a concern that imported pork may be the cause of the ping domestic pig prices.
Viet Nam''s total import turnover of livestock products in the first six months of 2021 is estimated at US$1.82 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8.9 per cent.
The price of live hog in the Vietnamese market decreased recently after the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) allowed imports of pigs from Thailand.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has asked pig breeding farms and households to reduce the price of live hog to VND70,000 (US$3) per kilo in order to stabilise the domestic market during the COVID-19 pandemic.
From April 1, the live hog price needs to to VND70,000 per kilo from VND75,000. It would continue reducing to VND65,000 per kilo by the end of the second quarter and VND60,000 in the third quarter, Dung said.
