According to Việt Nam''s General Department of Customs, in 2023, Việt Nam imported about 2.2 million tonnes of coal from Laos with a value of about US$159 million.
Viet Nam’s coal imports are forecast to rise to meet domestic production demand, according to a draft strategy for developing the coal industry in Viet Nam recently introduced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).
The Viet Nam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin) forecasts another 10 per cent in local consumption demand this year.
According to statistics from the General Customs Department, as of December 15 Viet Nam had imported a total 13 million tonnes of coal worth US$860 million during the year, more than four times the targeted 3 million tonnes.
