An anti-dumping duty between 25.73 per cent and 32.75 per cent would be imposed on sugar products imported from some of Thailand’s biggest sugar producers, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry has decided to levy a temporary anti-dumping tax of 44.88% on unrefined sugar and 33.88% on refined sugar imported from Thailand.
This general department must strengthen management and inspection of market to prevent and strictly handle muggling and commercial fraud for sugar and sweetening products.
The sugar and sugarcane sssociation has proposed to the PM not to allow an extension for temporary sugar imports for re-export as the sweet industry was struggling with high stockpiles and slumping prices due to illegally imported sugar.
The tax on imported sugar, as stipulated by the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), will be maintained at 5 per cent from the beginning of this year, instead of zero per cent as previously rumoured.
