HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — With the long New Year holiday, sales at supermarkets and shopping malls saw a strong uptick in sales.

Saigon Co.op's supermarkets, including Co.opmart Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Co.opmart Ly Thuong Kiet, Co.opmart Dinh Tien Hoang, Co.opmart Binh Trieu and Co.opXtra, were crowded with customers from December 31 to January 3.

Fresh and dried foodstuff, confectionary, beer, soft drinks, beverages and garment products were among the best-sellers.

According to Saigon Co.op, sales this year were significantly higher than a year ago and the number of shoppers had increased by two- to three-fold compared to non-holiday periods.

The supermarket's promotions and discounts on thousands of items also contributed to higher sales.

The supermarket estimated that average revenue during the holidays was two to three times higher than that of normal days, with sales of beer, beverages, confectionery, and dried foodstuff at certain outlets four times higher than normal.

Big C supermarkets, which offered discounts on more than 1,000 essential products during the holidays, also said sales were 150 per cent higher than that of normal days. The French chain said its outlets elsewhere in the country saw three times the normal number of shoppers, including a large number of tourists and people returning to their hometowns for the holiday, Ho Quoc Nguyen, Big C's public relations director, said. — VNS
