HÀ NỘI — Shopee, one of the leading e-commerce platforms in Việt Nam, has issued an important notice regarding changes in tax payment obligations for business households and individual sellers operating on the platform.

Starting from April 1, 2025, Shopee will assume responsibility for deducting, declaring and paying taxes on behalf of its sellers.

This move is part of Shopee’s efforts to comply with the new tax regulations set out in the National Assembly's Law No 56/2024/QH15, which was enacted on November 29, 2024.

Under the new legislation, e-commerce platforms like Shopee are required to deduct taxes from transactions, declare the amount deducted, and pay the taxes directly to the relevant authorities.

Shopee emphasised that it will soon provide detailed instructions to sellers regarding the tax laws, applicable tax rates, and tax bases once the decree related to the law is officially issued.

According to this new tax policy, sellers on Shopee must ensure that they provide full and accurate information, including their business type, full name, tax code, and identification details.

According to data from Metric, in Việt Nam, Shopee held 64 per cent of the revenue market share in 2023 and 2024, a lead that surpasses its competitors, including TikTok Shop, Lazada, Tiki and Sendo.

The Vietnamese e-commerce market has been expanding rapidly, with the B2C e-commerce revenue expected to reach VNĐ598.6 trillion in 2024, marking an almost 50 per cent increase from 2022.

This growth highlights a significant shift from traditional retail to online shopping, further reinforcing the importance of ecommerce platforms in the country’s digital economy. — BIZHUB/VNS
