Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc put emphasis on the need for long-term solution to create new drivers of growth and economic impetus to help the country escape the middle-income trap, especially as ageing population has already been underway.
He was working on Monday with his economic advisory group in Ha Noi.
Head of the group Nguyen Duc Kien said last year, the group joined the World Bank, the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy and the Vietnam Social Science Academy in completing research on the new growth model, provided consultation to the PM on measures to stabilise the macro economy, enhance growth, take advantage of the movement of foreign capital and enterprises in the US-China trade conflict, as well as orientations to be included into the socio-economic development strategy.
In 2020, the group would analyse, assess and forecast the situation as well as the results of the implementation of the strategy so as to provide the Government leader with measures to achieve the goals set, especially those on stabilising the macro-economy and accelerating growth, Kien said.
It would closely watch domestic and foreign economic development, including the US-China trade conflict, to help the PM make directions in the face of arising issues in a timely manner, he said.
The group would also provide consultations on medium- and long-term issues towards fulfilling socio-economic development plans and give opinions to building the national strategy on the fourth industrial revolution; propose solutions to develop the mechanical engineering industry, particularly automobile assembly and production; and research and propose models of modern cooperation in connection with large-scale agricultural production; and research to balance electricity production between hydropower, gas-fired power and coal-fired power; and measures to cope with drought risks in 2020 and the coming years, according to Kien.
Members of the group have suggested measures to expedite the progress of national key infrastructure projects including the eastern part of the North-South expressway, the planned construction of the Long Thanh airport in Dong Nai Province and the expansion of the Tan Son Nhat international airport in HCM City.
Speaking highly of the group’s work, PM Phuc expressed his hope that the group would help him with measures to achieve high growth in the context of the complex development of the global situation.
The group should continue providing new initiatives and ideas, and should closely follow the domestic and foreign economic situation so as to find out new issues and provide consultations for the PM, particularly in measures to adjust related policies.
It should also have a long vision in close association with the 2021-25 plan; actively give opinions to the building of mechanisms, policies and laws; and help the PM in information dissemination tasks, the PM stressed, adding he would be ready to listen to its ideas. — VNS
