HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — The Sai Gon New Port Corporation inaugurated its Tan Cang – Hiep Phuoc Port in HCM City's Nha Be District on May 19, six months earlier than scheduled.

Considered an extension of the Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port, the new terminal is expected to play an important role in HCM City and its surrounds where import-export activities are expanding.

Located at a point where the city, Mekong Delta provinces, the East Sea and many industrial zones converge, it is set to be a warehouse for the delta and the city's industrial zones.

According to the corporation, the terminal, which is on the Soai Rap River, can accommodate fully-loaded 50,000DWT vessels and semi-loaded 70,000DWT vessels with its robust infrastructure that includes a 420m wharf, a 253m pier for barges and a 17ha warehouse.

Since its first phase began operating late last year, the port has become the top choice for importers and exporters in the south of the city and the delta.

Nguyen Dang Nghiem, the company's director, said, "Sai Gon New Port is testing an automatic port and taking steps to build a port network and logistics centre here, which is expected to make it the main port for HCM City and Viet Nam over the next few decades." — VNS
