HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) affirmed that the country's automated teller machine (ATM) systems have not been affected after Microsoft ended support of its Windows XP operating system.
The information was provided on SBV's website on April 22 after concerns were raised about the security of ATM systems in Vietnamese banks.
SBV also asked institutional organisations to improve their ATM systems which use Windows XP. The organisations were required to carry out additional technical solutions to ensure security for ATM systems activities during the upgrading process.
SBV said that ATMs use another version of Windows XP, including separate functions for its activities and security enhancement. The connections to ATMs are under special control in the network systems of banks. Therefore, the risks of cyber attacks are lowered. In order to enhance the security for ATM software, banks implement safety solutions to prevent illegal access and malware.
ATMs are also equipped with monitoring systems, automatic warnings or are directly protected. According to SBV, at the moment, the ATM system of institutional organisations in Viet Nam has worked stably and has not faced any security risks because of Microsoft's withdrawal of support for Windows XP.
SBV is now writing a circular regulating the technical standards for equipments used for payments and the security insurance for payments. It is expected to bring a legal foundation for applying technical standards and security systems to payment activities in general and for ATMs in particular. — VNS
