HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) celebrated the registration of the one millionth domain name written in Vietnamese on August 25.

The celebration came as the total number of domain names in Vietnamese moved the country to the top of the list of the world's internationalised domain names (IDN), a term for domain names written in different characters that enable Internet users to access them in their own language.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been granting IDN for countries since May 2010 and has registered more than 5.2 million IDNs in 2013.

Since August 9, the number of activated domain names in Vietnamese numbered more than one million, but as of July 2014, the number of websites with registered domain names in Vietnamese was estimated to be merely more than 153.

Tran Minh Tan, VNNIC Deputy Director, said actively used domain names in Vietnamese have increased from 10.15 per cent in 2012 to 18.07 per cent in 2014.

VNNIC, a subordinate office under the Ministry of Information and Communications, has been granting free online registration of domain names in Vietnamese since April 28, 2011.
