HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Thares Punsri, chairman of Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission, said he hoped to sign a memorandum of understanding with Viet Nam on telecom and information technology.

It has signed an MOU with Laos, and plans to sign with Cambodia and Myanmar soon, he said, during a meeting with Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang in Ha Noi on July 23.

Thang expressed support for the initiative, and instructed the ministry's Department of International Cooperation to liaise with Thailand to draw up the MOU.

Punsri said Viet Nam and Thailand should strengthen co-operation in IT and telecom to integrate better and have a stronger voice on the international scene in the context that the ASEAN Community comes into being at the end of this year.

Concurring, Thang said ASEAN countries need to co-operate with each other to have a common voice to boost the development of telecom and IT.

He hoped Viet Nam and Thailand would share their experiences to set up their respective national broadband networks and make terrestrial digitisation plans. — VNS
