HA NOI (Biz Hub) — People's Committee in the southern province of Kien Giang's Phu Quoc Island District has announced its detailed planning at a scale of 1:2000 on Duong Dong and An Thoi towns.

The map reveals that Duong Dong urban area will be the district's centre, located at an area of 2,518.9 hectares. The town is expected to have a population of 240,000 people by 2030.

The town was designed to be an active and impressive area in the future. It will be a place for international exchange, promoting development for the whole island.

Meanwhile, An Thoi town, located at an area of 1,022 hectares, will be an international port centre, supplying non-tariff logistics and trade and tourism services. Industrial parks and a cultural and historic centre will also be constructed. The town is expected to have a population of more than 70,000 people by 2030.

The plan is being carried out by Japan's Nikken Sekkei Civil Engineering Ltd, with a total expenditure of US$1.2 million, reported Tien Phong (Vanguard) Newspaper.

Phu Quoc Island District will be developed into an economic zone, with a total area of 58,923 hectares, according to a prime ministerial decision issued in 2013.

The decision revealed that the coastal economic zone will cover the whole area of the district, encompassing Duong Dong town, An Thoi town and the eight communes of Cua Can, Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Duong To, Tho Chu and Hon Thon (including the islands to the south of An Thoi).

The economic zone will include a duty-free zone, encompassing An Thoi Port and Phu Quoc Airport. The remaining area will serve tourism purposes and services, and port logistics.

It will also include an industrial area, urban and residential zones, an administrative section and other buildings.

The economic zone's organisation, operation and policies will follow the Investment Law.

Phu Quoc is one of Viet Nam's tourist attractions set with beautiful white sand beaches and quaint fishing villages. More tourists visit the island since the international Phu Quoc Airport became operational in December last year. — VNS
