The People’s Committee of central Ha Tinh province has withdrawn the licence of an iron exploitation project that is yet to be implemented nine years after it was approved.

The project, developed by Ha Tinh Iron and Steel Joint Stock Company, was approved by the provincial People’s Committee in 2008 with total investment capital of VND158 billion (US$7.02 million).

The project, with designed capacity of 500,000 tonnes of iron ore per year, was expected to generate jobs for thousands of local workers and boost the district’s development.

However, after nine years, the project’s investor has still not begun building the project.

Local authorities also decided to withdraw the land assigned for the project.

Authorities of Vu Quang District and Son Tho Commune were asked to increase supervision to stop any organisation or individual from illegally exploiting minerals at the project site. — VNS
