HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The Airports Corporation of Viet Nam (ACV) will expand the Tan Son Nhat International Airport while waiting for the opening of the Long Thanh Airport in the next ten years.

Speaking at a meeting with Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, ACV general director Le Manh Hung said that ACV would extend the airport terminal by 3,900 square metres and open 40 more check-in counters.

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport received 20 million passengers last year. During the peak season, it has handled 550 flights a day, said Hung, who added that if the airport is not expanded, it would be difficult to meet the increasing demands of travellers.

According to ACV's calculation, the expansion work will create 21 more parking bays for planes, bringing the total to 61.

Minister Thang agreed with the ACV proposal and asked it to associate further with the other airports in Viet Nam and the region.

He also asked the corporation to carry out equitisation as planned to change the management thinking and to improve competitiveness. ACV needs to build an overall strategy for the immediate future and a vision for post- 2030, in which it will interlink the road, railway, waterway and marine services with the national transportation network. — VNS
