Shares start week higher on the back of banking stocks

Shares ended higher on Monday morning, boosted by gains in bank stocks.

The market benchmark VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) rose 0.52 per cent, to 1,359.66 points. The market's breadth was positive with 217 stocks increasing, while 199 stocks declined.

The liquidity also improved, showing the return of investors' appetite. Accordingly, investors poured over VND13.5 trillion into the southern bourse, equivalent to a trading volume of nearly 494 million shares.

The benchmark's rally was driven by bank stocks and some other large-cap stocks. The VN30-Index, tracking 30 biggest stocks in market capitalisation on HoSE, posted a gain 0.78 per cent, to 1,466.97 points.

Of the VN30 basket, 20 stocks climbed, while 10 slid.

Banking stocks maintained their gains until the end of the trading session, strongly supporting the indices. The best performers in the group included Bank for Investment and Development (BID), Vietinbank (CTG) and Vietcombank (VCB).

On Ha Noi Stock Exchange (HNX), the HNX-Index gained 0.60 per cent, to 360.10 points. VNS
