Shares slumped for the third straight session on Friday morning following the negative movement of global stock markets.

The US stock market on Thursday plummeted with three major indexes losing more than 2 per cent, after data showed the country’s declining production in December and Apple’s warning about lower revenue.

The Dow Jones fell 660.02 points, equivalent to 2.83 per cent, to end at 22,686.22 points. The S&P 500 lost 62.14 points, equivalent to 2.48 per cent, to close at 2,447.89 points. The Nasdaq lost 202.43 points, or 3.04 per cent, to 6,463.5 points.

The benchmark VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange lost 0.61 per cent to end morning trading at 872.86 points. It had decreased 1.52 per cent to end Thursday at 878.22 points.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index shed 0.14 per cent to end at 100.38 points. It moved down 2.09 per cent to end at 100.52 points on Thursday.

Nearly 97.2 million shares worth a combined VNĐ1.7 trillion (US$73 million) were traded on the two markets.

Large-cap companies performed poorly with the blue-chip VN30 Index falling 0.64 per cent to 833.43 points.

Meanwhile, market breadth was negative with 132 stocks gaining and 263 declining, while 359 ended flat.

Blue-chip stocks that declined included Petro Vietnam Gas JSC (GAS), steel maker Hòa Phát Group (HPG), steel maker Hoa Sen Group (HSG), confectionary producer Kido Group (KDC), Masan Group (MSN), brewery Sabeco (SAB), VPBank (VPB) and Vincom Retail (VRE).
