Shares declined on the two national stock exchanges in the Tuesday morning trade as large-cap stocks lost growing momentum.

The benchmark VN-Index on the HCM Stock Exchange edged down 0.31 per cent to 842.55 points.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index decreased 0.38 per cent to 105.58 points.

Overall, the market condition was negative as the losing stocks overwhelmed the gaining ones by 254-117. The other 346 remained unchanged.

Blue chips led the downturn and weighed on the markets.

Eighteen of the top 30 largest shares by market value and liquidity on the HCM Stock Exchange fell and only nine advanced.

Heavyweight stocks like Vinamilk (VNM), FLC Faros Construction (ROS), brewer Sabeco (SAB), Vietcombank (VCB) and Petrolimex slumped.

On the negative side, some big companies maintained an upward trend but their growth was modest, including lender BIDV (BID), VinGroup (VIC), Military Bank (MBB) and PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services (PVD). All of these shares increased by less than 1 per cent in the morning.

A total of 131.5 million shares worth a combined VND2.4 trillion (US$105 million) were traded in the two markets.

The afternoon trade session starts at 1pm. – VNS
