Shares extended their losses on Thursday morning as investors showed they continue to be affected by the negative movement of world markets.

US stocks plunged again on Wednesday, confirming a correction for the Nasdaq and erasing the Dow and the S&P 500’s gains for the year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 2.41 percent. The S&P 500 fell for a sixth consecutive day, down 3.09 percent. The Nasdaq decreased 4.43 per cent.

The VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange declined 2.45 per cent to 900.11 points by the end of morning trading.

It declined 1.80 per cent to 922.73 points on Wednesday.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index fell 1.97 per cent to end at 101.69 points.

The index lost 1.27 per cent to end at 103.73 points on Wednesday.

Some 143 million shares worth a combined VND2.8 trillion (US$119 million) were traded on the two markets.

Declining stocks dominated the market with a total of 350 stocks seeing prices fall, while just 72 others ended on a positive note.

Poor investor confidence continued to hit stocks on a large scale, led by large-cap companies after the VN30 Index fell 2.26 per cent to sit at 876.27 points at the end of the morning session.

Many large-cap stocks were hit hard, falling at least five per cent, including VPBank (VPB), Vinhomes (VHM), Viet capital Securities JSC (VCS), PetroVietnam Gas JSC (GAS) and Vietnam Joint Stock Bank of Investment and Development (BID).

The afternoon trading session starts at 1pm. – VNS
