Over 230 players for HD Bank Cup chess tourney

The 7th HD Bank International Open Chess Tournament to be played in HCM City from March 11 to 17 has attracted over 230 players from 24 countries.

Compared to past editions, this year the event has attracted more players from more countries, including Argentina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, and Venezuela, the bank’s deputy general director, Lê Thành Trung, told a press conference on Tuesday (March 7).

Besides, players from China, Russia, Switzerland, Indonesia, and Germany are again playing in the tourney.

The event has an average Elo rating of 2,383, and includes China’s Wei Yi from, a super grandmaster with a rating of 2,725.

It has total prize money of US$45,000, $5,000 up from last year, with the winner set to get US$13,000, Trung said.

Nguyễn Phước Trung, general secretary of the Việt Nam Chess Federation said the event would be a nine-round Swiss league.

Việt Nam will be represented by Lê Quang Liêm, Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn, Đào Thiên Hải, Trần Tuấn Minh, Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên, Võ Thị Kim Phụng and others.

According to the organisers, Wei and Liêm are the favourites in the men’s event while Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria and Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên of Việt Nam are the strongest in the women’s field.

The annual tournament, the largest of its kind held by the Việt Nam Chess Federation, is a World Chess Federation (FIDE) event.
