HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Young people interested in gaining cyber security expertise have been invited to participate in the WhiteHat Grand Prix, scheduled to begin in Ha Noi on October 24.

The international competition, hosted by Vietnamese software developer Bkav, aims to enhance learning and research in cyber security among the youth, thereby increasing the number of cyber security experts in the country, Bkav said at a press briefing on September 23.

Under the contest rules, the interested parties may form teams of two to five members each, aged below 35. They must register their respective teams at www.whitehatvn.com, a forum for aspiring cyber security experts, before October 19.

The qualifying round of the contest will be held on October 24 and 25 at whitehatvn.com. On December 19, 10 qualifying teams will enter the final round.

The first, second and third prizes of the contest are VND225 million (US$9,990), VND45 million ($1,998) and VND22.5 million ($999), respectively.

WhiteHat Grand Prix will be held every year, following the success of the monthly WhiteHat Contest hosted on www.whitehat.vn, an online forum that boasts 20,000 members.

Vice Chairman of Bkav Ngo Tuan Anh said Viet Nam's cyber security expertise has been confirmed via local cyber security experts' discovery of a series of hackings of government websites or gaps in well-known software programmes.

The competition would be an opportunity to introduce Viet Nam's cyber security developments to the world, he said.

The WhiteHat Grand Prix is being held quarterly since last year. However, only local participants are eligible to participate in the contest.

In July this year, Bkav upgraded the competition to an international level on a trial basis and drew the participation of 200 teams from more than 10 countries, including the United States, Japan and Korea.

The term "white hat" refers to an ethical computer hacker or computer security expert who specialises in penetration testing and in other testing methodologies to ensure the security of an organisation's information systems.

In contrast, a "black hat" is a hacker who violates computer security for little reason beyond maliciousness or personal gain. — VNS
