The Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) successfully restored high-quality mobile network services for authorities, the military, and hundreds of thousands of residents on islands and fishermen at sea in the coastal areas of Quảng Ninh and Hải Phòng, which were affected by Typhoon Yagi on September 17.

By deploying microwave links and establishing temporary wireless communication systems to replace damaged cables, Viettel became the first telecom provider to restore stable, high-quality mobile services across all island districts and communes affected by the storm.

The restoration of communication on Bạch Long Vỹ Island in Hải Phòng was especially significant due to its strategic importance in national defence and security.

On September 16, Viettel’s technical teams in Vân Đồn, Quảng Ninh Province, established communication systems connecting five island communes of Bản Sen, Ngọc Vừng, Thắng Lợi, Quan Lạn and Minh Châu to provide emergency communication for local authorities in areas without electricity.

A representative of Vân Đồn District People's Committee, said: “With Viettel’s support in restoring communication, not only was the mainland network reconnected, but also the communication between island communes and the Vân Đồn District People's Committee was promptly restored.

"This ensured smooth information flow, aiding the local authorities in managing post-storm recovery efforts, stabilising the situation, minimising damage, and protecting residents and local assets.”

In addition to their work on the islands, Viettel has fully restored its network services across all provinces impacted by Typhoon Yagi. This swift action has allowed local authorities to better coordinate their recovery efforts, and residents have expressed gratitude for the speedy reconnection of their communication networks. — VNS
