The national carrier Vietnam Airlines and its partner Australia’s Qantas Group have agreed to expedite changes to Jetstar Pacific to improve the operations and profitability of this low-cost airline and promote the scale and brand of Vietnam Airlines in the domestic market.

Jetstar Pacific will conduct necessary procedures to change the brand name to Pacific Airlines, with a new logo and brand identity inspired by the dominant colour of Vietnam Airlines.

The operation time under the new name Pacific Airlines will be decided by authorities.

Pacific Airlines will also convert a reservation system from Navitaire to Saber, which is operated by Vietnam Airlines, in order to synchronise its flight network, booking procedures and other features for customers.

Deputy CEO of Vietnam Airlines Trinh Hong Quang said the low-cost carriers play a certain role in the recovery of the aviation industry in particular and the economy in general.

“With the synchronisation of the sales and flight network, Pacific Airlines and Vietnam Airlines will enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness in both traditional and low-cost aviation segments, steadily entering the recovery period after the COVID-19 pandemic,” Quang said.

“We hope that the dual brand strategy will help both carriers expand their scale and fulfill long-term development goals, while contributing to consolidating the leading position of Vietnam Airlines Group in the country’s aviation market,” he added.

Gareth Evans, senior leader of Qantas Group and CEO of Jetstar Group, said in the face of a fiercely competitive market like Viet Nam and the severe disruption of the aviation industry due to COVID-19, it is time to take advantage of Vietnam Airlines' advantages and potential in the domestic market.

He said the new updated ticket booking system will help Pacific Airlines cut costs and create a solid foundation for the airline to continue development, especially after the regulations on restrictions of international travel are removed.

Facing common aviation challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, two major shareholders of Pacific Airlines, Qantas Group and Vietnam Airlines, will continue to consider the restructuring plan of this low-cost airline, and make the necessary changes related to the shareholding structure. — VNS
