HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Toshiba Corporation has announced that it will disburse scholarships worth a total of JPY1.6 million (about US$13,322) each this year to two national universities.

The scholarships aim to help deserving students access quality tertiary education at Viet Nam National University HCM City (VNUHCM) and Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi (VNU-Hanoi).

Selected post-graduate students will each receive an annual scholarship that covers tuition and offsets any living expenses.

Prof. Duong Anh Duc, vice president of VNUHCM, said: "As Viet Nam continues to improve its manufacturing base and services, the demand for better skills and manpower resources will increase."

"VNUHCM, one of the leading university systems in Viet Nam, with support from Toshiba, is committed to provide highly qualified human resources to meet the economic development of the country," he added.

Recognising the benefits of education in science and technology, areas in which Viet Nam is pursuing a growth policy, Toshiba has supported the program since 2005. Scholarships have been given to more than 400 students.

Apart from scholarships, Toshiba in 2007 set up a laboratory to develop platform technology for embedded software and embedded systems with the College of Technology of VNU-Hanoi. —VNS
