A bridge built with recycled beer bottle caps has been inaugurated in An Giang Province, benefiting 2,300 households.

The bridge, over the Hoa Binh Canal, connects Tan Chau Town's Phu Vinh Commune and Phu Tan District's Phu Xuan Commune.

It is 44m long and 4m wide and can carry up to five tonnes.

Built in eight months, this is Tiger Beer’s second bridge made from bottle caps after an earlier one in Tien Giang Province.

Duong Van Cuong, chairman of Phu Tan District People’s Committee, hailed Tiger Beer’s role in improving public infrastructure for the local community.

“It helps raise public awareness of environmental protection and recycling. I look forward to seeing more bridges like this built across Viet Nam.”

After three months about 200 Tiger Beer outlets collected over 940,000 caps, equivalent to two tonnes.

At the recycling facility, they were processed at low temperatures to prevent harmful emissions and mixed with other materials to create raw iron for building the bridge.

Alexander Koch, commercial director of Heineken Viet Nam, said: “Consumers want to be part of something meaningful. We feel honoured they chose to join us and contribute to improving public infrastructure”

The next bridge would be built by January next year and the company looks forward to further expanding the project, he added. — VNS
