HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Two thousand first-year university students in the 2016-17 school year will benefit from a programme launched on Friday to benefit disadvantaged students.

The Viet Nam National Union of Students and Merap Group's Osla brand are sponsors of the programme.

Freshmen with high scores on the 2016-17 university entrance exams will receive free bus tickets to move from rural areas to Ha Noi, HCM City, Can Tho, Hue, Da Nang and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).

The tickets will be given from September to November when a new school year begins.

The total bus fee is VND500 million (US$22,490).

In addition, organisers said they would present 100 scholarships worth a total of VND300 million to disadvantaged students with high scores.

According to the union, 400,000 students enter universities every year. Many of them are disadvantaged students and some cannot afford to pay all of their tuition. — VNS
