SON LA (Biz Hub) — Japanese camera maker Canon opened two new classrooms at a primary school for ethnic minority students in Viet Nam's mountainous Son La Province.

Canon also donated teaching and studying equipment for teachers and students at Na Cai Primary School in Yen Chau District, which is about 315 kilometres north-west of Ha Noi. About 68 students from several ethnic minorities study at the school from grade 1 to 5.

The school's five classrooms had been damaged by seasonal heavy rains and flash floods.

"We are very happy because it is the first time that we are allowed to use a modern camera to take a photo by ourselves," said Nuong Van Duong, a 10-year-old student at the school. "I will study hard to become a photographer in the future."

Canon general director Hiroshi Yokota pledged more funding for the school to improve its basic infrastructure and studying aids for students.

Canon has funded improvements in 45 schools in Viet Nam during the last six years. — VNS
