HA NOI (Biz Hub) — Toyota Motors Viet Nam (TMV) signed a traffic safety memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) in Ha Noi on July 29.

Under the MOU, to be implemented from 2015 until 2018, the two will work together to promote traffic laws with local populations, provide vehicles and equipment for traffic inspectors, and support victims of traffic accidents.

A key feature of the plan is to start with early education, teaching primary school students about traffic safety to develop a strong traffic culture in future generations.

Khuat Viet Hung, NTSC vice chairman, said that 2014 was the first year the number of traffic fatalities made it below 9,000.

"The NTSC pledges to co-operate with TMV to implement this programme to reduce this year's death rate as much as possible," said Hung.

TMV president Yoshihisa Maruta said, "I hope the programme will help people increase their awareness of and obey traffic laws. I hope it will reduce traffic accidents and ensure more orderly traffic in Viet Nam." — VNS
