HCM CITY (Biz Hub)— The State Bank of Viet Nam has announced that it discovered transactions worth more than VND50.9 trillion (US$2.41 billion) last year that it suspects are related to money laundering.
The amount includes transactions in other currencies that have been converted into Vietnamese dong.
The central bank said it has submitted 165 reports on such transactions to concerned police and inspection agencies for further investigation.
The State Bank of Viet Nam also received 50 requests from law enforcement agencies to review and provide information relating to dozens of suspects and culprits in other criminal cases.
Banking inspection teams and agencies in provinces and cities have also discovered many individuals and organisations involved in money laundering.
The central bank and the concerned agency in Thailand recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on information exchange to fight money laundering.
Viet Nam has signed such MoUs with six foreign financial intelligence agencies. — VNS
