Banking sector still tainted by corruption

HA NOI (Biz Hub)— The State Bank of Viet Nam has unearthed 21 cases of corruption in the country's banking sector over the last six months, according to the Government Inspectorate's report published on its website last week.

According to the half-yearly report, SBV's inspectors discovered 21 cases of fraud involving VND682 billion(US$32,4million), 561.2 taels of gold and $ 50,000. The authorities have detained 14 people, sacked seven, moved four, demoted two and are considering the cases of two others in more detail.

According to the report, in the first 6 months of this year, inspectors carried out more than 94,000 inspections of ministries and departments, organisations, businesses and individuals nation-wide.

They also found that VND12,225 billion ($582million) and 452 ha of land had been misappropriated during land acquisitions. —VNS
